A good ponytail is a good ponytail. Polish it up or tousle it, but if it’s done well, you’ve got yourself a keeper. If you’re just putting up it to keep it out of your hair… cut that out! Unless your cleaning house, at the gym, or doing something that requires your hair to be out of your face, try not to do it. And if you must, play it up!
Ponytails are a great 2nd day hair go-to. Today, I’m digging on the bouffant ponytail and here’s a quick how-to:
Start out with some dry shampoo. That stuff is a god send. It absorbs the oils AND gives you enough volume to buy you another day of not washing your hair. Spray that at the root, let dry and brush out your hair.
Next it’s essential to use a teasing comb for this. Sure, you can use any old brush, but these combs make it so much easier! My favorite is the Paul Mitchell Tease brush. The pointy end allows for a clean parting to keep gathering more hair!
Leave a section out around your hairline and start teasing at the crown. Use some hairspray if you’ve got clean hair for some texture. You’ll want to back comb the root gently and create a pillow-y cloud of hair. DO NOT RAT IT OUT. You’ll end up with a doggy mat type look and that’s not sexy! Once you’ve created enough teased hair at the crown, start brushing your hair into a pony while smoothing out the hairline section you left out before. Secure your elastic and voila! Now if you want some volume, go ahead and tease the bottom half of your ponytail and smooth out the top! Instant glam hair!
Avoid creating your teased section too far back above the crown. This is why you want a good foundation to your back combing and not a messy nest of hair. You’ll end up with an egg shape. Womp Womp Womp.
Now, go practice!
